Local celebrities will compete tomorrow morning at the Staunton Kroger to fill their carts with as much food as possible within 60 seconds to support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

The competition in Staunton “Shop to Stop Hunger” will begin at 10 a.m. March 27, at 850 Statler Boulevard, Staunton.

Since its inception in 2013 by former food bank board member Jeanne McCusker, “Shop to Stop Hunger” has provided more than 789,744 meals across the Blue Ridge region, making a powerful impact in our community.

The winner is determined by the most valuable cart and the most public “votes,” which is food and funds donated in their name. Kroger customers can “vote” by placing food items in contestants’ donation barrels at the store or by making online contributions. All groceries and funds will be donated directly to the food bank.

As co-sponsors, Kroger and Weaver Insurance will cover all event costs and donate the groceries directly to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Cart Away Hunger” participants include Zanny Bandy of Smoky Row Excavating, Connie Davis of Central United Methodist Church, Priscilla (PJ) Piñeiro Jenkins of the Staunton Public Defenders Office, Staunton City Council member Corrie Park and Jim Simmons of KK Homes Team of Long & Foster.

Donations are also welcome online.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization serving Western and Central Virginia. Founded in 1981, the food bank serves 25 counties and 8 cities through distribution centers in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Winchester and its headquarters in Verona.
