Bridgewater College collaborates with EMU on Intensive English Program

International students at Bridgewater College who could benefit from English language immersion will be able to do so thanks to an agreement between Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite University’s Intensive English Program (IEP).

Under the terms of the agreement, the IEP will enroll qualified Bridgewater College students in one or more semesters of an English language immersion experience designed to build language skills and provide valuable intercultural relational skills.

EMU’s IEP focuses full-time on English classes and concentrates on building language skills through immersion in a new culture. IEP students interact with classmates from around the world and with North American EMU students through the Lively Intercultural Learning Across the Curriculum (LILAC) program.

Students will spend 20 class hours per week in the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar.

Cross-cultural encounters help speed the learning process and create lifelong memories.

Anne T. Marsh, coordinator of Bridgewater’s Center for International Education, said Bridgewater will conduct the recruitment and initial screening of students and recommend them to study in IEP. Once in the program, each student will take an English placement assessment to determine their best course of study.

“The IEP provides a comprehensive, structured program for international students and we’re very excited about how this partnership will strengthen international recruitment and enrollment at Bridgewater,” said Marsh.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,700 undergraduate students.
