Breeders’ Cup Classic 2026: Big guns ready for epic head-to-head
Forever Young cemented his status as one of the top racehorses in the world with a memorable victory in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The Japanese superstar recently recorded his 12th win from 16 career starts with an emphatic success in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
The five-year-old tracked early leader Phileas Fogg before taking control with three-eighths of a mile to run and drawing clear from his rivals.
Assistant trainer Yuki Araki declared that he was ‘very happy’ with the horse’s performance. He will now attempt to win the Classic for the second consecutive year.
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott saddled Stars and Stripes and Baeza to finish second and third at Belmont, which gives him a useful indicator of what it will take to defeat Forever Young.
The two-time Classic-winning trainer is looking forward to tackling last year’s winner with Sovereignty, who recently returned to the work tab at Saratoga.
The reigning Horse of the Year was forced to miss the Jockey Club Gold Cup with a hoof abscess, but looked in fine fettle during a four-furlong workout last week.
Mott subsequently said that he is confident that Sovereignty will make it to the Classic, setting the stage for what promises to be a clash for the ages with Forever Young.
“We’re going to the Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Mott said. “If he keeps working okay, okay, great – that’s what we want. Yes, absolutely, that’s the goal and when we get there every morning that’s what we’ve got our sights on.
“So, hopefully, everything keeps going smoothly from this point on and that’s where we plan to go and that’s where we’d like to go.
“I think if our training schedule doesn’t get interrupted again and there are no soundness issues and he’s healthy, we’ve got plenty of time to get some useful works in him.
“It’s day-to-day with any horse, but hopefully we can just move forward and we should be able to get enough in him if we don’t have any more setbacks.”
Choosing between Forever Young and Sovereignty is extremely tricky, but the former’s greater race fitness could prove to be decisive down the home stretch.
Whatever the outcome, horse racing fans and sports bettors will be treated to a truly memorable head-to-head battle between two top-class thoroughbreds.
