There is not one, but two possibilities of snow on the radar in Virginia in the coming week. On top of possible snow, extremely cold air is also on the way with temperatures dipping to the lowest the region has seen in more than two years.
Over the next few days, temperatures will be more moderate in the Shenandoah Valley, with two to three days of high temperatures in the 40s, but don’t get too excited about the change, says one weather expert.
Temperatures are expected to “crash” next week, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Thomas Kines.
“Looks like some rain or snow will occur over the weekend,” Kines told AFP. “If the cold air catches up to the precipitation, there could be a one- to three-inch snowfall in the Shenandoah Valley and across the northern part of the state on Sunday.”
Don’t run to the store for milk and bread just yet. AccuWeather isn’t predicting snow, but it is a concern, Kines said.
AccuWeather is predicting extremely arctic air in the region next week, he said.
“Temperatures plunge early next week,” Kines said. “There might be a day the temperature fails to rise out of the teens which doesn’t happen every winter.”
The last time temperatures were that cold was just before Christmas in 2022.
“This is a ferocious blast of cold air coming our way,” Kines said. “Mother Nature means business this time.”
Looking ahead, he is watching for a second potential snowstorm.
“There is concern with the cold air in place, a storm tries to track northeast from the Gulf coast states next week,” he said. “If this were to happen, there might be a period of snow mid-week.
“Again, we are not predicting this, but it is something to keep in mind.”
