blue ridge juvenile detentionThe Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Commission has selected Cathy Roessler as its next superintendent, replacing retiring superintendent Charles Edwards, effective Oct. 1.

”Ms. Roessler was competitively selected from almost 40 applicants,” Commission Chair Steve Nichols said. “She is the ideal person to take over the leadership reins of this institution from our retiring Superintendent, Charles Edwards. Cathy brings excellent education and work experience credentials, and the Commission is confident that she will continue BRJD’s record of safety and of strong collaboration with all community stakeholders.”

Roessler joined Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention in 2008 as the programs coordinator and has served as the assistant superintendent since 2010.  She has worked in the social work field since 1995 in Maine and Virginia, primarily in child welfare with adolescents and their families.

Roessler is a graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle and holds a Master of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Edwards, announced his retirement in May after more than 40 years of public service in the field of adult corrections and juvenile justice. Edwards was the first superintendent of Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention and has served in that capacity since 2001.  Nichols said that “Charlie has been a superb leader and innovator since this facility opened, and he will be truly missed.  We wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.”

“This has been the greatest privilege of my life, to lead this wonderful group of employees who have dedicated themselves to public safety and the betterment of the youth who have been entrusted to our care.  I want to thank the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Commission and our employees for their support over the past 14 years.  I wish them continued success in the future,” Edwards said.
