Boycotts

Flipping through the headlines today, I saw something about some mayor somewhere making a big deal about boycotting Sam Adams beer because the founder is a big Trump guy.

Meh.

I’ve been boycotting Sam Adams beer for 20 years, and it had nothing to do with Trump, and a lot to do with how the beer tastes like stomach juices backing into your mouth when you’ve had too much greasy pizza.

People think too much of themselves with this boycott stuff.

Seriously, don’t drink Sam Adams, don’t watch CNN, whatever makes you happy.

Nice dinner at The Red Hen

A hundred eighty degrees from a boycott, my wife and I had dinner at The Red Hen in Lexington a couple of weeks back.

Yes, that Red Hen.

Easily the best meal I’ve ever had. I had steak and a baked potato, which sounds simple, but, man, oh, man, it was good.

Also good: the desserts. I ordered something chocolatey, made the mistake to give a sample to the missus, and ended up with hers, banana ice cream on shortbread, I think.

Having eaten there, I can see why it would be hard to serve a group of people you wouldn’t want in your restaurant. The place is tiny, and the meal prep is done basically right there in front of you.

The Fox News embed reporter is no longer stationed outside, unfortunately. A FedEx delivery guy walking by yelled out, “That place sucks,” though I doubt seriously that he’d ever eaten there (our meal, with our former next-door neighbors, came out at just short of $400).

Oddly, then a guy driving a truck down the street yelled back at the FedEx guy, “That place is awesome.”

The staff did a cool thing as we were getting ready to leave. As the manager thanked us for dining with them, he asked, deadpan, “So, how did you hear about us?”

Good stuff. Highly recommend. They don’t serve Sam Adams.

Privilege

Driving to the east side of the city today, I was struck by the ongoing untenable situation regarding the Florence Avenue bridge that has been closed since November 2016 due to safety concerns.

The latest on this is that the city is still sorting through things, the bidding process, et cetera, and that the timetable for getting the work done is summer 2019.

I’ll just say it like this: if this was a bridge in the Pelham neighborhood, to Meadowbrook Road, to any of the new subdivisions ringing the city, the work would have been done sometime in December 2016, if not sooner.

I believe the term that applies here is white privilege.
