Blacksburg: Virginia Tech student crossing street dead, struck by police officer

A 22-year-old student at Virginia Tech is dead after he was struck by a Blacksburg police officer’s vehicle on North Main Street overnight.

Spencer Davis Woodson Forsling, 22, of Blacksburg, was crossing North Main Street when he was struck by an officer responding to an emergency call.

Forsling died at the scene.

Virginia State Police is handling the investigation at the request of Town of Blacksburg Police Chief John Clair.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday at 2:27 a.m. in the 100 block of North Main Street, at the intersection with Roanoke Street. The officer’s Ford Explorer was traveling west when the vehicle struck Forsling.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was not injured.

When the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review.
