The tale of the legendary origins of a mysterious marine-research institute is the focus of a new novel by Bridgewater College professor Ed Huffstetler.
Kunstler and the Terrible Monster chronicles the events in a small Southern beach town when a giant unidentifiable creature washes up in front of a cottage owned by an equally unidentifiable man named Kunstler.
Prodded on to do so, Kunstler investigates the creature – and sees the town turn into a media circus as he goes about the task.
“On a philosophical level, the story is a series of conversations about the nature and methods of science, the meaning and place of religion in the contemporary world, the growing necessity of hearing all the cultural voices that make up our society, and the possibility that indigenous cultures might have something important to teach us,” said Huffstetler, a professor of English and American literature at BC and a resident of Bridgewater.
A book signing is scheduled for Nov. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in Harrisonburg.
