BC alum signed to NFL practice squad

Less than a week after getting released by the San Francisco 49ers, Bridgewater College All-American wide receiver Tyler Beiler landed across the country on the practice squad for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Beiler was one of seven players signed to head coach Jack Del Rio’s practice squad after the team made the final cut to 53 players on Saturday evening.

The 2011 D3Football.com South Region Player of the Year joins Mount Union’s Cecil Shorts on the Jacksonville squad. Shorts was the fourth-round pick to Jacksonville in April’s NFL draft.

Following offseason negotiations from the player lockout, the new collective bargaining agreement has a league minimum salary of $5,700 per week for practice squad players.

Beiler was named the Division II-III Player of the Year by the Manheim Touchdown Club at their annual banquet earlier in the year after pulling in a laundry list of hardware after a breakout season.

He was named to the AP Little All-American team in December, in a compilation of the best players from Division II/III and NAIA. He was also named the winner of the Willie Lanier Award as the state of Virginia’s top small college football player.

In addition, he was named the state Player of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and The Roanoke Times.

On top of his Virginia awards, Beiler was also named the South Region Player of the Year by D3Football.com and was a first team All-American selection by D3Football.com.

Beiler led the nation in all-purpose yards and receiving yards per game, adding to numerous postseason honors.
