Bath Senior Center One Step Closer to Historic Designation

bathlogolargeThe process to obtain historic designation for the Bath Community Senior Center building, the former John Wesley United Methodist Church, has progressed another step forward. Beth Scripps, Preservation Planner and Research Historian with Frazier Associates architectural firm, visited Bath County on May 14. She interviewed several members of the Senior Center and of the Warm Springs community. There were individuals who had been life-long members of John Wesley, one who had been baptized there, another who had joined in her youth, a former Sunday School superintendent and the daughter of the last African American pastor of the congregation in the group.

Beth’s subsequent e-mail to P.Y. Henry, who planned the day, read, “Thank you so much for organizing all the wonderful and informative interviews with members of the community yesterday. I learned so much about the history of West Warm Springs and character of the community. Your efforts and the time and information gathered yesterday will be so helpful as we prepare the nomination for the church.”

Beth was able to relieve some Center members’ concerns about the building having been used as collateral for the loan to renovate the Waynesboro building and answer other questions they had about this process. She plans to visit again and tour more of the community soon. We appreciate the attention she is giving to our project.
