Award-winning photojournalist Gary Fabiano to speak at Bridgewater College

AFP

Award-winning photojournalist Gary Fabiano will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

Having a passion and concern for world events and their effects on others, Fabiano tells stories through his camera lens.

Fabiano has documented the tumultuous landscapes of Bosnia, Kosovo, the West Bank and Gaza, Israel, Albania, Beirut, Haiti and the United States. He has witnessed wars, civil strife, ethnic and religious hatred, social upheaval, coups d’état, elections and terrorist attacks.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Fabiano was photographing the attack on the World Trade Center when the platform he was standing on collapsed, trapping him under the debris. His photographs from that day have been included in exhibitions, books and in an HBO documentary.

He received first place in the Professional Division in the 1999 Kodak/PDN Black and White Photography contest. He earned recognition in the 2000 Alfred Eisenstadt Awards, where he was featured in the “Best Magazine Photos of the Year” special edition of Life magazine.

In 2002, Fabiano’s photographs from the West Bank were presented the SPD Award of Merit from the Society of Publications designers.

A member of SIPA Press, Fabiano’s photographs have been published in magazines around the world including Life, Newsweek, Time, US News & World Report, Paris Match, Mother Jones, Le Figaro and the Times London.

Fabiano lives in Washington, D.C., where he is a member of the White House Press Corps and serves as a photographer for the U.S. Department of Labor.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,750 undergraduate students.
