An Augusta County woman is facing a felony charge after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs to an inmate at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on Dec. 23.
Brooke Ashley Maddox, 32, of Verona, has been charged with one count of delivering a controlled substance to a prisoner.
According to the Albemarle County Police Department, approximately 100 sheets of Suboxone were concealed in a medical brace left at the front counter with jail staff. The drugs were discovered later through a screening.
Suboxone is used most commonly to help with withdrawal symptoms from an opioid addiction. It is one of the most common contraband items entering secure prison facilities.
Maddox turned herself in to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, Jan. 1. She was released on an unsecured bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
A hearing is scheduled on Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. in Albemarle General District Court. Online court records show a couple of traffic violations but no previous drug charges against Maddox.
