An early learning center in Augusta County that was closed by the state will reopen on Monday, under a different name, with an emphasis on nature.
Natural Wonders Early Learning Center had hoped to open this week, but the inspection process took longer than anticipated, according to Rebecca Ward, director, in an update on social media.
The childcare center is located at 74 Quicks Mill Road in Verona.
Previously operated as Wonder Land Enrichment Center, the licensing was revoked by the Virginia Department of Education on June 26 for multiple violations.
Despite two decades of serving families in the region, the center was abruptly shut down and parents were forced to find alternative care for their children during the final weeks of summer break.
“Our parents love us. The community loves us,” Ward said. “I’m just not understanding why the Virginia Department of Education feels a need, that after 20 years, to deny a license without even considering a probational period.”

Parents who spoke with AFP after the announcement were panicked saying alternatives were limited and expensive, and approximately 100 families were searching for care at the same time.
“I’m doing a lot of crying. I have a lot of anxiety, and I am calling everywhere,” one Bridgewater mom told AFP.
Ward, even as Wonder Land was closing its doors, vowed to reopen with her name on a new license. Ward served as the director of Wonder Land, but her mom held the license and owned the building.
Just over 10 weeks later, Ward and her sister, Emily Maddox, appear to have jumped the hurdles necessary to open their doors to families throughout the region.
“This is such an exciting milestone for us as we prepare to welcome families back,” Ward said.
