Augusta County: Interstate 64 Exit 91 traffic updates for Oct. 2-3

The Virginia Department of Transportation has scheduled overnight closures for the Interstate 64 exit 91 eastbound off-ramp to Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) in Augusta County. In addition, the eastbound right lane of the interstate will be closed from mile marker 90 to 92. These closures are for milling and paving from 7 p.m. Friday, October 2, until 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Eastbound I-64 drivers who need to access Route 285 will detour north on I-81 to exit 222, then follow Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) east back to Route 285.

The lane and ramp closures are part of the reconstruction of exit 91 at Route 285 near Fishersville. All work is weather permitting.

When contractors finish the Route 285 project, the road will have four lanes for just over one mile, between Route 636/640 and Route 935 (Expo Road). A new bridge over I-64 will accommodate the additional through lanes and dual left-turn lanes at both on-ramps. Additional turn lanes at the Route 636/640 intersection will handle traffic from the nearby hospital complex. Route 285 will have a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded Shirley Contracting of Lorton, Va., a $21 million design-build contract in September 2012. The company is performing the work in three phases, starting with construction of the new bridge over I-64 and widening the roadway to the west side of Route 285.
