Augusta County: Driver of stolen car crashes on Interstate 81, leads police on a foot pursuit

A Henrico County man was arrested Sunday night after he crashed a stolen vehicle on Interstate 81 in Augusta County.

Dylan E. Peters, 18, is currently being held at the Middle River Regional Jail, according to Virginia State Police.

Peters led police on a foot pursuit after the accident and was caught later with the assistance of deputies from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.

The stolen Hyundai Elantra was in the left lane of I-81 northbound at the 236-mile marker when it struck a guard rail at 8:58 p.m. The crash caused significant damage to the vehicle which had been stolen from Chesterfield County earlier in the day.

Peters has been charged with:

  • two counts of credit card larceny
  • misdemeanor hit and run
  • possession of Schedule IV substances
  • operating without a license
  • DWI-drugs
  • grand larceny
  • being a pedestrian on an interstate
