The Arts Council of the Valley proudly announces the recipients of the Arts in Education Grant and Creative Inspirations Grant for the 2011-2012 Grant Cycle.
The Arts in Education Grant recipients are Edwina George of South River Elementary School for Art Night and Kate Nesmith of Stone Spring Elementary School for Persuade Me Tee. The Creative Inspirations Grant recipients are Dr. Carl Donakowski for Roberto Sierra Residency in conjunction with Arcos Trio Latin/American Chamber Music Festival and Dr. Wanchi Huang for String Classical Music Outreach.
Edwina George’s project for South River Elementary School, Art Night, seeks to provide both “students and guardians with a knowledge of various art making techniques.” Since students only receive art education classes once every other week, this project aims to encourage an appreciation of the arts for both students and guardians and encourage students’ creativity outside of the classroom. George is the Art Teacher at South River Elementary School.
Kate Nesmith’s project for Stone Spring Elementary School, Persuade Me Tee, seeks to expand students’ notion of art and the impact of persuasive messages and images on t-shirts. Students will discuss the messages and art of t-shirts they have seen and then work to create a message and image that will “attempt to persuade others to change or adapt their behavior by wearing a t-shirt with a positive message.” Nesmith is the Art Teacher at Stone Spring Elementary School.
Dr. Carl Donakowski project, Roberto Sierra Residency in conjunction with Arcos Trio Latin/American Chamber Music Festival, celebrated the “influence of Latin American music on contemporary classical music in the United States” and provided the Harrisonburg community with an opportunity to learn about this trend in classical music. Roberto Sierra composed a piece for Arocs Trio and the group performed the piece at local middle schools and during a free, public concert for the community. Donakowski is an associate professor of cello at James Madison University’s School of Music and is a member of Arcos Trio.
Dr. Wanchi Huang’s project, String Classical Music Outreach, aims to provide a public, educational concert to help expose the community to classical music. Along with a guest artist and fellow JMU Music faculty, the group will perform popular classical pieces, reaching out to diverse cultural and age groups, to enhance the appreciate of classical music in the community. Huang is an associate professor of violin at James Madison University’s School of Music.
The Arts Council of the Valley is pleased to offer two exciting grants, the Arts in Education grant and Creative Inspirations grant that benefit both the student and general Harrisonburg City- Rockingham County community. The Arts in Education Grant is offered for projects that serve and target kindergarten – 12th grade students Harrisonburg City and/or Rockingham County and demonstrate a clear benefit to the educational and student community. The Creative Inspirations Grant is designed to support the greater arts community and encourages local artists to create projects that stimulate greater public understanding of the proposed media and bring together diverse groups of people through shared cultural events.
Applicants interested in applying for the 2012-2013 grant cycle should visit ValleyArts.org after June 15 for information and grant application materials. Applications will be due at the end of September 2012.
