Art Center taking registrations for Summer Studio

Only four days remain to register for the first week of Summer Studio at the Staunton Augusta Art Center. Registration ends Monday, June 4.

The 4- to 5-year-olds will be learning about the Maharajas who put a high value – in every sense of the word – on bejeweling themselves to enhance their status.  We chose this topic because it looks glittery and fun, has historical significance, and is quite a testimony to the role of art in political and social arenas.  Also, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts just opened a new, fabulous exhibition on the topic which will be up through August 19.  Art educator Melanie Chagnon, who did a great job for us last summer, is returning to teach this class.

The 6- to 8-year-olds will be focusing on Pharaohs. We’ve never known a teacher more enthusiastic about teaching a class than Katie Spurlock, and this one is almost sold out.  Come share instructor Katie’s enthusiasm for the mummified Egyptians, literally etched in history by way of artful hieroglyphics and pyramid interior décor.

9- to 12-year-olds, led by experienced art teacher Heather Sutton, will explore cartoonists’ expressions of political leaders and will create their own cartoon interpretations of personal, community, and national current events.

Some need-based scholarships are available with a recommendation from the student’s art teacher, classroom teacher, principal, or guidance counselor.

Pre-registration is required by calling the Staunton Augusta Art Center at 885-2028.  The cost for the week (10am-Noon, June 11-15) is $75 members, $85 non-members.
