Armed teen arrested after tense standoff with Waynesboro Police

Chris Graham

policecar3The Waynesboro Police Department has charged an Augusta County teenager with several offenses after a tense incident yesterday in which the 16-year-old male pointed a loaded firearm at a police officer.

At approximately 4 p.m., several officers and detectives responded to the area of North Bayard Avenue and Fourth Street for a report fifteen to twenty individuals fighting.

When police arrived, most of the individuals had fled but officers saw the juvenile walking hastily away from the scene holding his hand to his waistband.  When an officer instructed him to stop, the juvenile fled on foot northwest through the 600 block of North Bayard Avenue.  Three officers pursued.  During the foot pursuit, the juvenile pulled a handgun from his waistband while running and pointed it in the officers’ direction who were about 20 yards from him.  He did this twice.

At least one of the pursuing officers unholstered his firearm but did not shoot.  When the juvenile got to the back of the Klann Inc. facility, 301 Fourth Street, he threw his handgun between two exterior buildings.  The officers were then able to take him in custody.  The handgun, a 40-caliber Taurus semi-automatic, was recovered.  It was loaded with four rounds of ammunition including one in the chamber of firearm.

Officers took the juvenile to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Intake Office where he was ordered held.  He is being confined in the Shenandoah Juvenile Detention Center in Verona.

He is facing the following charges:

  • Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (f)
  • Brandishing a Firearm (m)
  • Obstruction of Justice (m)
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon (m)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile (m)
