Amherst County repeals ordinance barring ex-felons from business licenses

virginia-organizing-new2Virginia Organizing leaders in the Lynchburg chapter celebrated yesterday when the Amherst County Board of Supervisors voted to repeal an ordinance that could have been used to discriminate against returning citizens seeking employment or a business license.

Lynchburg Virginia Organizing leader Terrick Moyer attended the Board of Supervisors meeting when the ordinance was repealed.

“Common sense became common again last night when the Amherst County Board of Supervisors amended an ordinance that could have denied a business license or employment to people with a felony record,” said Moyer. “The repeal of this ordinance means that people will have access to employment and a chance to change their lives.”

Virginia Organizing Chairperson Ladelle McWhorter also responded to the vote.

“Virginia Organizing is pleased that the Amherst County Board of Supervisors did the right and just thing to support second chances and opportunity for people who have served their time and are returning to community life.”
