AEW ‘Dynamite’ preview: Not much set in stone for Wednesday night

Chris Graham

aew logo Just two matches have been set for this week’s AEW “Dynamite,” which is starting to look like it might play out like one of the old YouTube shows, if this is what we’re going to get.

Toni Storm and Marina Shafir are meeting in a no holds barred match, which probably won’t involve former UFC and WWE star Ronda Rousey, who made a surprise appearance alongside Shafir at Sunday’s “Revolution” pay-per-view.

The other match that we know about at press time: Gabe Kidd vs. Darby Allin in a coffin match.

Zzzzz.

‘Revolution’ redux

Revolution ended with a bit of a thud, after a hot start – FTR successfully defending the AEW tag belts against The Young Bucks, then being confronted by a returning Adam Copeland and Christian Cage; then, the Rousey cameo, following the Storm-Shafir match on that card, which was won by Storm.

The successful Jon Moxley Continental Title defense against Konosuke Takeshita was really good, as was the Swerve Strickland victory over Brody King in a grudge match.

The Women’s World Title match between Thekla and Kris Statlander didn’t need to be best-of-three falls, given the way it played out – Thekla winning in three falls.

We still had Andrade El Idolo vs. Bandido and MJF defending the World Title against former champ “Hangman” Adam Page to go, but we had to wade through a pair of six-man matches to get the good stuff – and it took 17:09 for JetSpeed and Mistico to win the Trios Title from the Don Callis Family, and 12:23 for Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy and Roderick Strong to beat Gabe Kidd, Clark Connors and David Finlay.

That’s a half-hour of in-ring, plus the additional time for intros and outros, lengthening a show that pushed well into the midnight ET hour with the MJF-Page match going 46:18 bell-to-bell.

The gimmick to the main event – Texas Death, basically, no rules, everything including bazookas legal – was GCW at its worst.

After the teases with the return of Copeland and Cage and the surprise appearance of Rousey in the first hour, “Revolution” seemed to on its way to being something.

Turns out, the first hour was the highlight.
