Active Summer Planned at Maury River Senior Center

AFP

vpasheader0311Although summer is always filled with lazy, hazy days, Maury River Senior Center will stay busy despite the heat. MRSC staff have planned months filled with activities to entertain, educate, and have fun.

With short breaks for vacations, The Mrs C’s Kickers will continue to practice line dancing every Monday at 10am. New members are always welcome, and for those who are new to line dancing, instructional sessions are held Mondays at 11am.

Center gardeners meet every Tuesday at 9:30am to tend the Center’s raised-bed gardens, admire their successes and mourn their failures. Anyone who is interested in raising flowers and herbs – or just digging in the dirt – can join the gardeners at any time.

Mrs C’s Pickers and Singers practice Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10am. Always looking for new members, the Pickers and Singers perform a monthly concert at MRSC, and occasionally perform in the community at charitable events.

MRSC’s quilters meet Wednesdays at 2pm, and are currently working on their latest effort, a queen-size machine pieced and hand quilted beauty. The quilters enjoy learning from each other, and are always ready to welcome newcomers to their circle.

Special events during the summer will include concerts, crafts, health and nutrition education, two slide shows – one of Malawi, Africa and the other a tour of Rockbridge County through the seasons, storytelling, and a watermelon feast.

MRSC is pleased to note that the Center will host the first and last sessions of the Buena Vista Public Library’s Children’s Summer Reading Program. On June 20, the Roanoke Children’s Theatre will bring their production of “Stuart Little” to the Center to kick off the program. The Summer Reading Program will end at the Center on July 31 with a Kids Concert by Blouin and Wolfe, Harlow and Hodges – Grumpy Old Men.

All activities are open to anyone 60 and older, and specific dates and times for special events can be found in The News-Gazette Calendar, on MRSC’s website, www.mauryriversc.org, or by calling the Center at 261-7474.
