#6 UVA impressive in 86-48 opening win over Morgan State

uva-basketballMorgan State hung close with sixth-ranked UVA for most of the first half, but the Cavs closed the opening 20 minutes on a 12-2 run, and went on a 17-0 run to start the second half to pull away to an 86-48 win Friday night.

The Cavs led by two midway through the first half, and a Tyler Streeter layup made it 28-21 Virginia with 3:37 left in the half.

Two Anthony Gill free throws ignited the 12-2 run that made it 40-23 Cavs at the break.

Virginia held Morgan State scoreless for the first 5:38 of the second half to open up a 57-23 lead.

Mike Tobey led four Virginia scorers in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had eight rebounds.

Devon Hall had 13 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Darius Thompson, who got the start at the three position, had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in his UVA debut.

Anthony Gill had 12 points and seven rebounds for Virginia, which shot 20-for-30 (66.7 percent) in the second half after struggling from the field in the first half, hitting on just 12 of 35 shots (34.3 percent).

Morgan State shot 34 percent (17-for-50) from the field for the game. Kyle Thomas led the Bears with 14 points.

Virginia had a 50-21 advantage on the boards and a 42-12 advantage in points in the paint.

The ‘Hoos travel to George Washington for their first road game of the 2015-2016 season on Monday.
