One of the most important skills to become a sonographer is having a strong attention to detail. Excellent vision is key to your success as a sonographer, as you will be responsible if anything is missed when conducting the scan. You will also need to have excellent hand-eye coordination, as you will be required to move a device across a patient’s body whilst simultaneously watching a video monitor to see the patient’s organs.

Emotional Support

Another key skill to have when becoming a sonographer is possessing a friendly and approachable attitude. Patients may be in distress or extreme pain when going through a scan, so it is important to emphasize with their situation and give them any reassurance should they need it. Also, having excellent communication skills with your patient will ensure the scan goes as smoothly as possible.

Technical Skills

Before you can qualify as a sonographer, you will need to undergo thorough training into every aspect of the job, including the technical side. If you don’t fully understand the medical equipment and computerized imagery, you will not be able to progress. If you are interested in training as a sonographer, looking into sonography schools in Colorado and other states, as this can give you a better idea of whether it is the right route for you.

Discretion

Like with any job, having discretion is vital to maintaining a professional demeanor and successfully doing your job. As the sonographer carries out the scan, they are usually the first to identify any abnormalities. However, as a sonographer is not trained to make any diagnoses, they are strictly forbidden from passing any information on to their patient. It is important that you keep your findings to yourself and send them on to the relevant doctor, who will be able to confirm your diagnosis.
