#4 Virginia guts out tough 64-57 road win at Clemson

AFP

virginia basketballA 7-0 Virginia run erased a late deficit, and the fourth-ranked Cavs clawed their way to a 64-57 win over Clemson on Tuesday night.

UVA (23-6, 12-5 ACC) led 12-0 five minutes in, but the Tigers, 7-1 at home in ACC play coming in, cut the deficit to 33-27 at the half, and took their first lead of the game, at 35-34, on an 8-1 run fueled by Jaron Blossomgame, who had a monster offensive game.

The 6’7” junior, who had 23 points in a 69-62 loss in Charlottesville last month, torched the ‘Hoos for 31 on Tuesday, on 10-of-16 shooting from the field.

But he had no help, as his teammates were a combined 10-for-30 on the night.

Clemson (16-13, 9-8 ACC) led 47-46 with 6:50 left on a three-pointer by Gabe Devoe, but a layup-and-one by Anthony Gill on UVA’s next possession gave Virginia the lead.

London Perrantes answered a Blossomgame three with a three of his own with 2:44 to go to push the lead to four, at 56-52, and it would get no closer from there.

Malcolm Brogdon led Virginia with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Perrantes had 13 points, and Anthony Gill had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

UVA shot 40.4 percent from the floor (21-of-52) and was 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three-point range.

Clemson finished at 43.5 percent from the floor (20-of-46) and was 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from three.

The Cavs outrebounded the Tigers 34-27 and committed just eight turnovers while forcing 12 Clemson miscues.
