#3 UVA escapes Miami in 2 OTs, 89-80

London Perrantes scored a career-high 26 points, a Justin Anderson three with 12.1 seconds left in the first overtime gave third-ranked UVA new life, and the Cavs outscored upset-minded Miami 18-9 in the second OT to escape with an 89-80 win Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.

Virginia (13-0, 1-0 ACC) seemed to have the game on cruise control after a dominant first half, going into the break up 18 at 38-20. But Miami (10-4, 0-1 ACC) opened the second half on a 17-4 run, and after an Evan Nolte jumper pushed the lead back to 10 at 47-37 with 12:14 to go, the Hurricanes clamped down on D, limiting the ‘Hoos to three field goals over the next 10 minutes to pull within one at 54-53 on a pair of free throws by Angel Rodriguez with 2:23 left.

A three by Perrantes with 58 seconds left pushed the lead back to four at 60-56, and Virginia led by five at 63-58 in the closing seconds on a pair of Perrantes free throws. But Miami got back into it, getting a DeAndre Burnett layup with 6.7 seconds to go to narrow the margin to three, and then, after Nolte missed a pair of free throws, either one of which would have sewn up the game, Rodriguez drove the court after the second miss and was fouled attempting a potential game-tying three with nine-tenths of a second left.

Rodriguez made all three charity tosses to send the game to overtime.

Miami dominated the overtime and seemed to have the game in hand, but the ‘Canes committed a cardinal sin of their own, fouling Anderson on a three-point attempt with 20 seconds left and a four-point lead. Anderson made all three free throws to cut the margin to one, and then, after a pair of Rodriguez free throws on the other end, and a Tony Bennett timeout, Anderson got the ball on a dribble handoff from Perrantes, drove around the left wing behind the three-point line, and drained the game-tying three with 12.1 seconds to go.

Miami didn’t get a shot off at the end of the first overtime, and then took a brief lead at the start of the second overtime, on a three-pointer by Sheldon McClellan on the Hurricanes’ first possession.

It was all Virginia from there, with the Cavs outscoring Miami 18-6 the rest of the way, taking the lead for good on a jumper by Anderson with 3:41 to go, with the dagger being a 10-foot jumper from Darion Atkins with 1:23 to go in the game and five seconds to go on the shot clock on that possession to turn a three-point lead into a five-point working margin.

UVA went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final minute to close out the game.

Perrantes, who came into the contest averaging just 3.1 points per game, was 5-of-9 from three-point range and 11-of-12 at the line in the career effort. The sophomore also recorded eight assists in the game.

Anderson had 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Mike Tobey had 14 points and six rebounds, and Atkins had eight points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

Virginia shot 44.8 percent from the field (26-of-58) and was 10-of-21 (47.6 percent) from three-point range.

Miami had the rebounding advantage, 43-39. The ‘Canes shot 39.7 percent from the floor for the game (27-of-68) and 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from three-point range.

Rodriguez had 25 points on 7-of-22 shooting from the field and 10-of-12 shooting from the line to go with eight assists to lead Miami.
