Nathan Kirby didn’t just throw a no-hitter Friday night at Pitt. The UVa. lefty put in one of the more dominating no-hitters you may ever see.
Kirby struck out 18 and walked one in the 4-0 win for the top-ranked Cavs. Kirby (6-1) struck out 10 Panthers in a row at one point from the second through the fifth, and allowed just two baserunners on the night, on a one-out first inning error by third baseman John LaPrise that allowed Dylan Wolsonovich to reach base, and a walk on a 3-2 pitch to A.J. Lardo with one out in the fifth.
Kirby got Wolsonovich to ground out to short to end the game on a bang-bang play at first base after a nice pick in the hole by Daniel Pinero.
Virginia (26-4, 11-2 ACC) scored in the second on an error on a grounder off the bat of Brandon Cogswell that allowed Nate Irving to score, and made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI double by brandon downes that plated Joe McCarthy.
The ‘Hoos added two insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run error on a fly ball to right off the bat of mike papi that allowed LaPrise and Pinero to score.
Rhys Aldenhoven took the loss for Pitt (15-14, 7-6 ACC).
