‘Hoos open 2012 with 43-19 win over Richmond

Virginia jumped out to a 16-0 lead six and a half minutes in and rolled past Richmond 43-19 Saturday.

The outcome was not in doubt from early on. After the UVa. defense forced a UR three-and-out, Virginia marched 48 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Kevin Parks to take a 7-0 lead.

The Cavs forced another three-and-out on Richmond’s next possession, and scored a safety when the fourth-down snap sailed over punter Nick Hicks’ head. Virginia then scored following the ensuing free kick on a 51-yard pitch-and-catch from quarterback Michael Rocco to wideout Darius Jennings that made it 16-0 UVa. at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter.

Richmond hung tough for the next quarter and a half, limiting Virginia to two second-quarter Drew Jarrett field goals and getting a 3-yard touchdown pass from UVa. transfer Michael Strauss to Kendall Gaskins to go into the halftime break down 22-6.

Parks scored his second touchdown on the day on a 2-yard run at the 8:21 mark of the third quarter that put the ‘Hoos up 29-6. A John Laub-to-Seth Fisher 4-yard TD pass made it 29-12 at the end of three.

Perry Jones scored on a 4-yard run 1:44 into the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 36-12 Virginia. Then Alabama transfer Phillip Sims got into the game for his first action as a UVa. quarterback, and Sims impressed, leading Virginia on a 14-play, 87-yard touchdown drive that ended with a Khalek Shepherd 1-yard TD run that made it 43-12 UVa.

Richmond scored with 35 seconds left on a 1-yard Jacobi Green run to close out the scoring.

Virginia outgained Richmond 545 yards to 286 yards.

Rocco completed 26 of his 37 pass attempts for 311 yards.

Sims was 5-for-6 passing for 50 yards in mopup duty in the fourth quarter.

UVa. ran for 184 yards on 42 attempts and held Richmond to just 28 yards rushing on 21 tries on the ground.
