Bluefield College scored 62 points in the second half on 58 percent shooting Saturday  to run away from Bridgewater College, 103-65, in the BC/Don Glick Classic.

The Eagles stayed with the high-scoring NAIA Rams for the first half and trailed by just nine at the break.

The Eagles got off to a quick start with Ryan Johnson dropping assists to Ronnie Thomas and Daniel McClain for a quick 4-0 lead.

Bluefield then hit the Eagles with a 12-1 run and never trailed again.

The Eagles pulled to within three, 16-13, on a layup by Aaron Adams but Bluefield quickly pushed the lead back to double digits with an 11-4 run to take a 27-17 lead.

The lead hovered around the 10-point mark for the rest of the half before Benaiah Wise connected on a layup at the buzzer to pull the Eagles within nine, 41-32, at the half.

The Eagles were unable to slow down the Rams in the second half as the visitors hit 8-of-13 3-points shots in the final 20 minutes. When Bluefield wasn’t connecting from the perimeter, big man Byron Carpenter was dominating the paint as the Rams pulled away for the victory.

Carpenter, named the Classic’s MVP, finished the game with 32 points on 11-of-15 shooting. He also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Guards Kaersten Marion and Andrew Wilson joined Carpenter on the all-tournament team. Marion scored 17 points and Wilson added 10.

McClain and Thomas led the Eagles with 10 points each with McClain earning a nod on the all-tournament team.

In Saturday’s first game, Eastern Mennonite scored the game’s first 14 points and coasted to a 91-51 victory. R.J. Sims, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Royals with 16 points.

The Eagles take the week off for exams before returning to action next Saturday afternoon at Ferrum College.
