Jean Willi, head women’s basketball coach at Bridgewater College, has been inducted into the 2009 Turner Ashby High School Sports Hall of Fame for her career achievements.

Willi, a 1976 graduate of Turner Ashby and 1980 graduate of Bridgewater, is also associate athletic director for the college.

The induction, held earlier this month, noted Willi’s stellar performance in track and basketball at TA. She held the shot put record for many years and was voted Girls Track MVP in her senior year. Willi also played four years of varsity basketball, leading the team in scoring for three years, and was the first woman to letter in what was then a men’s sport – golf.

At Bridgewater, Willi was an All-State selection in basketball and was a member of the 1980 lacrosse squad that finished fourth nationally. After her graduation, she spent 11 years as the college’s assistant basketball coach before taking over as head coach in 1996.

As head coach, Willi’s teams have won two regular season ODAC titles, two ODAC tournament championships and five NCAA Division III appearances. Overall, her team’s winning percentage is 72.5.

“I feel privileged and humbled to be included in the Turner Ashby Hall of Fame,” Willi said. “It’s an honor to be remembered and to be included in a group consisting of so many other fine athletes.”
