Local artist Ashley Sauder Miller to exhibit ‘Fixers’ at Bridgewater College

bridgewaterHarrisonburg artist, Ashley Sauder Miller, will present “Fixers” in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College Sept. 28 – Oct. 28.

An artist’s reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Miller Art Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

Miller’s exhibition consists of mixed-media works on paper, canvas and panel that incorporate imagery of chairs.

The chair imagery began out of a practical need to fix an heirloom rocking chair Miller received following the death of her grandmother.

“As a hobby, I would fix up old chairs – reupholster, refinish, reweave, repaint – but had no knowledge of how to cane a chair,” Miller said. “I began to practice with thin, cut-up strips of old work on paper, unraveled canvas and yarn. Collaged and woven into these pieces are drawings, photography and mark-making of four generations: my late grandfather, late father, my own and my children’s.”

Miller earned a B.S. in art from Eastern Mennonite University and an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from James Madison University. She serves as director of the Spitzer Art Center.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight MondayThursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
