The public is invited to an open house on Tuesday, September 15, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at CitySpace (100 5th St NE) to provide input on the Streets that Work Plan. The Streets that Work Plan will guide the development of a fully functional, comprehensive street design guide for Charlottesville to improve the transportation network for all users and create vibrant and sustainable public spaces along streets.The Streets that Work Plan will focus primarily on the public right of way, but is being developed in conjunction with a city-wide code audit that will address regulations for private development. These processes share the same guiding principles – to ensure Charlottesville is/has: High Quality Space, Vibrant Places of Commerce, Safe & Accessible, Healthy, Green & Sustainable, Connected & Convenient, Collaborative, Policy Driven. The Streets that Work Plan will have two main components:
1) A set of design guidelines with representative street cross sections & a toolkit that can be used to apply the guidelines in multiple contexts.
2) An implementation plan that includes a review of the current project delivery process & recommended protocols for ensuring multi-modal mobility.
The city is seeking feedback on priorities for different types of streets throughout the city. The open house will include stations and a small group activity to solicit public input to guide the prioritization of various streetscape elements for each type of street. The City of Charlottesville has enlisted Toole Design Group (TDG), a “leading planning, engineering and landscape architecture firm specializing in bicycle and pedestrian transportation” to complete the plan. TDG has helped create complete street design guidelines and multimodal transportation plans for several other cities including Boston, MA; Governors Island, NY; and St. Paul, MN; Chapel Hill, NC.
