Waynesboro Police: Driveway paving scammers working the area

Chris Graham

policecar3The Waynesboro Police Department wants citizens to be aware of a likely contracting scam that has been reported to police officials.

On Saturday, a citizen was approached at her residence in the 700 block of Rosser Avenue by an individual claiming to be a black top paving contractor.  He told the complainant that his group was doing a job right around the corner and have leftover asphalt.  The individual presented a business card that indicated they were with “H&H Construction” and provided a phone number.

While there are many reputable firms having the business name H& H Construction, the group represented by this individual has a history of fraud.  An internet search of the he number showed an alert from another “customer” that had gotten scammed by this individual.

The individual is described as a clean cut white male in his 30’s with a tattoo on his arm.  He was driver a newer model white work truck with lights on top.  The Police Department suggests that anyone approached by this individual refuse any offer of service he may provide and notify your local law enforcement agency.

  • Never agree to work by a contractor who shows up at your house on a weekend.  Likely they are exploiting that government offices are closed and licenses can’t be verified.
  • Ask for local references and verify that the contractor is in compliance with local licensing, bonding and insuring requirements.
  • Ask for identification and make note of the license plate number on the contractor vehicle.
  • Solicit two or three bids for the work you are planning, but don’t automatically accept the lowest.
  • Make sure all bids are based on the same materials.
  • Read all agreements and guarantees before signing.
  • Make sure you understand all terms and conditions.
  • Never sign a contract with sections left blank.
  • Do not pay for work in advance. Pay by check when the work is completed to your satisfaction.
