salem red soxThe Winston-Salem Dash scored nine runs over the span of two innings and cruised to a 10-3 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark, completing a three-game sweep.

The Dash struck first in the first inning with a solo home run from Eddy Alvarez off of Trey Ball for a 1-0 lead. The bats then went quiet until the fifth inning, when the Dash sent 11 men to the plate. With runners on first and third, Ball spiked a pitch in the dirt allowing Nolan Earley to score from third. After singles from Adam Engel and Eddy Alvarez loaded the bases, Ball walked Jake Peter, driving in Michael Danner and pushing the score to 3-0.

Ball’s day ended there as Brandon Show was summoned from the bullpen with nobody out and the bases loaded. Keon Barnum drove in Engel with a grounder and Show delivered a wild pitch that allowed Alvarez to score from third. Omar Narvaez later singled in Jake Peter and TJ Williams followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Nick Basto to make the score 7-0 Dash.

Ball (8-10) was tagged for six runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four plus innings pitched.

The Dash extended their lead in the sixth with three more tallies. Alvarez doubled and Peter followed with a single before Barnum drove both in with a double over Cole Sturgeon’s head in center field. Barnum then scored on a Williams single, pushing the lead to 10-0.

James Dykstra (5-10) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief for Winston-Salem, allowing only three hits to go with four strikeouts. Carson Fulmer started the game for the Dash and did not allow a run in three innings with two hits and three walks paired with three strikeouts.

Salem squeaked three runs across in the eighth, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings. Mauricio Dubon singled and Kevin Heller was hit by a pitch. Sturgeon then smacked a double to score Dubon and Zach Kapstein was walked to load the bases. Jordan Procyshen then worked a walk of his own, driving in Heller. Jordan Betts followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sturgeon and cutting the lead down to 10-3.

Dubon was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and Kapstein went 2-for-3 with a walk. Heller did not recorded a hit but pushed his on-base streak to 17 games by reaching on a hit by pitch.

The Red Sox lost for the sixth time in their last seven games and fell to 54-60 and 16-28 in the second half while the Dash improved to 58-55 and 28-15. After an off-day on Monday, the Red Sox are back home Tuesday to face the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 7:05 p.m. Teddy Stankiewicz (3-10, 3.89) will start for the Sox against Jonathan Martinez (8-2, 3.00).
