Poll: Hillary Clinton continues big lead in Democratic Party presidential race

Chris Graham

hillary3Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is gaining momentum in New Hampshire, but former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues to hold a dominant lead nationally in the Democratic Party presidential race.

This according to a new national poll from Public Policy Polling, which has Clinton at 65 percent to 9 percent for Sanders, 5 percent for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, and 4 percent each for former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb.

Clinton has big leads among every Democratic Party constituency: she’s over 60 percent nationally with liberals, moderates, women, men, Hispanics, whites, and voters in every age group, and she’s polling at 83% with African-Americans.

Clinton also holds modest leads over her potential Republican challengers in early tests of the 2016 general election, anywhere from three to seven points. The rest of the field would trail in hypothetical head-to-heads with Republican opponents by anywhere from eight to 12 points.

One silver lining in the poll for Sanders: he is the most common second choice of Democratic Party voters, at 19 percent, suggesting that he could gain as his rivals start making their way out of the race.
