Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer Aubrey V. Watts Jr. has announced that he will retire from the City of Charlottesville at the end of July 2015.
Mr. Watts began his career in local government in 1963 as Deputy City Treasurer for the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He worked in various positions for the City of Virginia Beach for over 28 years, serving finally as City Manager from 1987 until 1991. From 1991 until 1998, Mr. Watts was City Manager of the City of Greenville, South Carolina.
He joined the City of Charlottesville in 1999 as Director of Economic Development and stepped into his current role in 2002.
“I have been privileged to have a long career in local government both in the Commonwealth of Virginia and elsewhere,” said Mr. Watts. “Public service has always been a part of my life and I am grateful for my 16 years with the City of Charlottesville. This city is a wonderful place to live and I have enjoyed being a part of such a well-run organization and excellent staff.”
“It has been an honor and privilege to work with Aubrey Watts,” said City Manager Maurice Jones. “During his 50 years of dedicated service to local government management he has left an indelible mark on three communities including ours. It would be impossible to overstate how much we, as a city and an organization, have benefited from his work ethic, wisdom and leadership. He will be sorely missed but we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
Mr. Watts serves as Chair of the Emergency Communication Center Board and represents the City of Charlottesville on the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport Authority Board. In 2014, he received recognition from the International City Management Association (ICMA) for his 50 years of local government service.
The City will begin the search for Mr. Watt’s replacement this summer. His last day is July 31.
