More than 100 youths with disabilities will participate in the Ability Olympics April 17-18 at James Madison University.
The mission of Ability Olympics is to empower individuals with disabilities by giving them a chance to compete in a challenging yet successful athletic environment. This year’s event will feature 13 sports and activities as well as fitness testing.
A social event that will include fitness testing, activities and a dance party will be held 5-8 p.m., Friday, April 17 at the Convocation Center. An opening ceremony will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, April 18 in Godwin Hall, followed by clinics and showcases of various sports in which they can participate until the closing ceremony at 3:45 p.m.
Sport and activity events will include:
- Aquatics
- Archery
- Baseball
- Builders and Bulldozers (sensory exploration)
- Dance
- Kidzone/Sensory Room
- Golf
- Gymnastics
- Self Defense
- Soccer
- Softball
- Tennis
- Track and Field
Ability Olympics is an event organized and run by the Overcoming Barriers program at JMU and co-directed by Dr. Tom Moran and Dr. Joshua Pate.
