Erie tops Richmond, 2-0, streak ends at six

Chris Graham

richmond-squirrelsThe Erie SeaWolves (51-55) snapped the Richmond Flying Squirrels’ (64-42) six-game win-streak with a, 2-0, shutout victory at Jerry Uht Park on Friday night.  The Squirrels were limited to a season-low one hit by a trio of hurlers and fell for the first time on their current road trip.

The SeaWolves opened the scoring against right-hander Kyle Crick in the second inning.  Steven Moya led off with a broken-bat single to right field.  Two outs later, Crick issued a walk to Marcus Lemon.  Dixon Machado followed with a single to left field to plate Moya for a 1-0 lead.

Right-hander Warwick Saupold (7-8) baffled the Squirrels for six scoreless innings.  He allowed just a lone hit – a double from Matt Duffy.  He did walk five, but worked around them and struck out two.  He earned his seventh win of the year.

Crick (6-5) faced no other adversity and turned in a very clean six innings.  He allowed just the lone run on five hits – all singles.  He walked four, but set a season-high and matched his career-high with 11 strikeouts.  He took the hard-luck loss, his fifth of the season.

Left-hander Ryan Robowski relieved Saupold and faced the minimum over two scoreless innings.  Right-hander Jose Valdez handled the ninth inning to earn his 15th save of the season.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 7:05 on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.  Richmond LHP Ty Blach (7-4, 2.95) will make the start against Erie RHP Jeff Ferrell (6-7, 5.73).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup begins at 6:35 p.m.on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
