Waynesboro Police release names of drivers in downtown accident

policecar3The Waynesboro Police Department on Monday released the names of the police officer and driver involved in the accident at the intersection of Main Street and Arch Avenue Friday night.

The driver of the 2011 Ford Crown Victoria police vehicle was 27-year-old officer Shamica R. Spears. The driver of the 2003 Hyundai Accent was 71-year-old Annette S. Powell.

Both drivers were transported to Augusta Health for treatment following the 7 p.m. Friday accident .

Spears was responding to Mountain View Apartments for a report of a domestic assault involving an armed assailant. The patrol vehicle was traveling north on Arch Avenue when it struck the Hyundai broadside. The Hyundai was traveling west on Main Street. The impact sent the Hyundai into the Waynesboro Visitor’s Center located at 301 W. Main St.

The crash remains under investigation.
