The beginning of the end for the guys on the wrong side of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley was the Third Battle of Winchester in 1864, which will be the focus of a living history encampment, at Fort Collier, this weekend.
Fort Collier will host an open house on Saturday and Sunday to mark the Sept. 19, 1864, battle.
Highlights will include the encampment, skirmishes and maneuvers featuring re-enactors from the 7th Virginia and 124th New York infantry regiments.
Historian Roy McCord will lead tours of the battleground each day.
The event is part of a series of activities in the Winchester area coordinated by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Historic District.
The open house will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the non-profit Fort Collier Civil War Center, which manages the 10-acre site.
