AEW has a new women’s world champ as well, with former TBS champ Mercedes Mone winning the belt from Willow Nightingale, who had to work the show with a broken left wrist.
After months of wailing and gnashing of the teeth over what seemed like a slow pace to the ticket sales for the live show, WrestleTix tells us tonight that AEW drew 47,054.
Once again, this puts AEW in that rarefied territory with the likes of WWE and UFC, in being able to put on combat-sport supershows that can draw in the range of what either brand of football can put in stadiums domestically and internationally.
Per Cagematch, the two world title matches were hits with fans – the Ospreay-Omega match, which clocked in at an even 35:00, has a 9.55/10 match rating at this writing; the Mone-Nightingale match, which clocked in at 21:52, has a 9.39/10 match rating.
The show also marked the AEW debuts for Austin Creed and Kofi, the former New Day of WWE, now to be known in AEW as New Level.
New Level teamed with former AEW world champ Swerve Strickland to win the AEW world trios championships in a match pitting seven three-man teams against each other in a battle royale format.
Later in the show, New Level made an appearance in the ring with former WWE world tag champs Motor City Machine Guns, the returning FTR, who are former WWE and AEW tag champs, and the combatants in Sunday’s tag title match, The Young Bucks and Adam Copeland & Christian Cage, who retained in 20:06, to set the stage for action at the top of the tag division going forward.
Former AEW women’s champ Britt Baker also made her return to the company, after a two-year absence, aiding Persephone in her match against TBS champ Maya World, which Persephone won to walk out with the belt.
