What’s wrong with college sports? Dude in the suite who doesn’t know who’s playing

What’s wrong with college sports: the guy at the bar in the media hotel here in Philly.

Overheard a conversation as I was ordering my lunch today. Not eavesdropping: the guy at the bar was pretty happy about the day he had coming up.

He’s going to spend the evening in a suite at the Xfinity Mobile Center, which will be hosting two games in the Round of 32.

And made sure we all knew about it.

“Well, congratulations,” the lady behind the counter said.

Smart gal – a guy with access to a suite might be a good tipper.

Might not be, but it was worth a shot.

Then she took my order, and asked me if I was in town for basketball.

I replied in the affirmative, and she noticed my UVA Basketball sweatshirt, and wished my team good luck.

As I was filling out the receipt and leaving her a tip, Mr. Suite asked to commandeer the remote for the TV above the bar, which he proceeded to switch to The Golf Channel.

Fine with me. Miami-Purdue was on, but I could flip that on my phone on the March Madness app, which is awesome, by the way.

The gal at the counter asked Mr. Suite who he was rooting for tonight.

“I don’t even know who’s playing,” was the reply.

“Well, Virginia,” she tried to help, but Mr. Suite didn’t care.

Seriously, The Golf Channel?

You wanted to know what’s wrong with college sports – it’s that the people who actually know who’s playing are being priced out so people like this asshole can hang out tonight in the suites.

What Dolly Parton meant to me: She reached back to lift others up, not get more for herself

I didn’t want to just write a Dolly Parton tribute to get my share of clicks from folks looking for something informative about her passing. I have nothing informative to offer on Dolly Parton, who passed on Tuesday at the age of 80 – she didn’t look anywhere near 80, BTW. No, nothing informative here,...
