A road-rage incident turned deadly on the Beltway this afternoon after a suspect stabbed four people, one fatally, and killed a dog. The suspect is also dead after being shot by a Virginia State Police trooper.
The chaotic incident occurred at 1:17 p.m. at exit 52 on Interstate 495 southbound in Fairfax County. When the trooper arrived on scene, he was confronted by the male suspect wielding a knife.
The trooper shot the suspect in self-defense, according to a statement from VSP. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and later died.
Four stabbing victims were located on scene. A 39-year-old female has died, and a dog was also stabbed and is deceased.
The trooper was not injured.
No names have been released.
The incident shut down the busy interstate for hours with multiple ambulances called to the scene and one medical helicopter.
The preliminary investigation indicates the stabbings occurred following a crash on Interstate 495 southbound.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Fairfax field office is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting.
This incident is not believed to be terrorism-related.
