Less than a third of Republicans think Donald Trump should try to serve a third term as president, according to new polling from YouGov, which tells us, only a fraction of the true believers are actually true believers.

Yeah, I know, fake news.

The number, 32 percent of Republicans for, 55 percent against, 13 percent not sure, drops further among people who told the pollster they voted for Trump in 2024 – that subset has 26 percent wanting Trump to try for a third term, 63 percent opposed, 11 percent not sure.

Fifty-five percent of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents view Vice President JD Vance as the “most electable” Republican in the 2028 cycle.

Trump gets 9 percent there.

YouGov asked which candidates those folks would consider voting for.

The favorites:

  • JD Vance: 66 percent
  • Marco Rubio: 39 percent
  • Ron DeSantis: 37 percent
  • Donald Trump Jr.: 35 percent
  • Ted Cruz: 24 percent
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: 18 percent
  • Tulsi Gabbard: 17 percent
  • Vivek Ramaswamy: 16 percent
  • Nikki Haley: 11 percent
  • Mike Pence: 10 percent
  • Tim Scott: 9 percent
  • Glenn Youngkin: 8 percent

Glenn Youngkin at 8 percent: bahahahahaha.

Early look at the 2028 Democratic race

On the other side, Democrats and Dem-leaning independents view Gavin Newsom as the “most electable,” with the California governor getting 31 percent there.

Former VP Kamala Harris is the only other candidate in double-digits, at 16 percent.

Of note, Harris has a slight lead in the candidates who Ds and D-leaning indies would consider voting for.

The favorites:

  • Mark Kelly: 34 percent
  • Elizabeth Warren: 29 percent

  • JB Pritzker: 25 percent
  • Josh Shapiro: 25 percent
