Longwood grinded out an 84-80 win at Morgan State on Saturday to get back over the .500 mark on the season.
The Lancers (6-5) got to the free-throw line – 44 attempts – and shot 51.1 percent from the floor and 7-of-15 from three.
Johan Nziemi and Jacoi Hutchinson tied for the team lead with 15 points apiece.
Elijah Tucker had 12 points, and Redd Thompson Jr. chipped in 10.
Elijah Davis put home 21 to lead Morgan State (1-7), and Alfred Worrell Jr. had 20. Rob Lawson hit four threes en route to 18 points.
“I believe we grew up and got a win in a tough environment,” first-year Longwood coach Ronnie Thomas said. “It was a very physical game, and I thought our guys took a lot of punches from multiple circumstances tonight, some being out of their control. I really credit their fight and ability to stay together. We have been challenging them to be more connected, and you have been able to see a difference since the MTE at American.”
The Lancers are back in action on Saturday when the team hosts Delaware State (3-8) at 3 p.m. The game is Military Appreciation Day and Prince Edward County Day.
In addition, the game will feature a Teddy Bear Toss. Fans can bring a teddy bear to toss onto the court for a free ticket to the game. The bears will be donated to Gleaning For The World as part of the organization’s Teddy Bear Brigade.
The game will air on ESPN+.
