The Robert Hurt campaign released internal polling showing Democratic challenger John Douglass trailing the Fifth District Republican incumbent by a 55 percent-37 percent margin.
The polling data was compiled by Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies. Bolger is the lead pollster for Gov. Bob McDonnell, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, and Robert Hurt’s 2010 campaign.
“This poll clearly shows that voters in the Fifth District are not buying Washington D.C. lobbyist John Douglass’ phony attacks,” said Hurt’s campaign manager, Sean Brown. “Robert Hurt has been an independent voice for common sense policies and voters clearly appreciate his leadership. Robert’s focus on job creation and overturning the job-killing Obamacare tax increases are resonating with voters in the Fifth District.”
There is some hope for Douglass even in the partisan-poll numbers. Looking at the generic congressional ballot in the Fifth, the lead for the Republican candidate was down to 11 points (51 percent to 40 percent).
The polling had Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ahead of President Barack Obama by a 51 percent-43 pecent margin. Obama lost the Fifth in 2008 by a 50.6 percent-48.3 percent tally even as Democrat Tom Perriello scored his upset win over then-Republican Congressman Virgil Goode.
The polling also had Hurt leading significantly, and rather curiously, among women by a 53 percent-37 percent margin.
