Virginia Tech won its first game since the firing of fourth-year head coach Brent Pry, coasting past Wofford, an FCS school, 38-6, on Saturday in Blacksburg.
The Hokies had lost their first three games this season by double-digit margins, including the 45-26 loss to ODU in Week 3 that prompted Pry’s dismissal.
The Hokies (1-3) were going to beat Wofford (0-4) no matter who was the head coach, so getting rid of Pry now was about keeping the win off his ledger, and delaying what seemed to be the inevitable – that the program will be going in another direction come season’s end.
This one was no contest – Tech, led by interim coach Philip Montgomery, the offensive coordinator, led 21-3 at halftime, and outgained the Terriers 461-141 on the afternoon.
Grad-senior QB Kyron Drones was 27-of-32 for 302 yards and two TDs.
