Update: Thursday, 4:22 p.m. Waynesboro Police are reporting that there are outstanding warrants for a Christopher Richard Cook related to this case.

A student at a Waynesboro elementary school reported that an adult that she knows had put a gun in her bookbag, and school staff and police confirmed that there was a weapon on school property.

This was the situation at William Perry Elementary School in Waynesboro on Thursday, according to an email to parents sent by Assistant Superintendent Ryan Barber that went out Thursday afternoon.

“Upon arrival this morning at William Perry, a student told her teacher and school administrators that an adult she knows put a weapon in her bookbag. Staff immediately secured the bookbag and searched it while also contacting the Waynesboro Police Department,” Barber wrote in the email, adding that “no threats were made, and at no point were students or staff in danger.”

Waynesboro Police are investigating.

“We’re proud of the student for speaking up right away – just as she’s been taught to do,” Barber wrote in the email.
