A winter storm advisory has been issued for this afternoon and overnight due to the potential for ice accumulation in northwest and western Virginia, as well as portions of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia.

The advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. this afternoon through 4 a.m. on Thursday as snow, sleet and freezing rain is possible.

Total ice accumulations will likely be around two tenths of an inch leading to slippery road conditions.

In Virginia, some areas received up to one foot of snow on Tuesday. In Waynesboro, six inches of snow fell before some freezing rain began.

Triple threat: Snow, ice, rain in the forecast for Virginians this week

The predicted ice was expected as three storms make their way through Virginia: the first with snow, the second with ice and the third with rain, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Thomas Kines told AFP.

“As if two storms is not enough, a third storm is possible over the weekend, but storm number three is probably all rain, perhaps starting as freezing rain,” Kines said.

AccuWeather predicts a busy weather pattern ahead in the seven to 14-day period following storm number three.

“We are concerned about colder weather returning after storm number three,” Kines said. “If the colder air does return, we might have to deal with another round of snow.”
