Richmond knocks off JMU women, 74-66

Richmond downed the James Madison women’s basketball team 74-66 Thursday evening at Lehigh’s Stabler Arena.

UR improved to 11-2 with its fifth straight victory, while JMU dropped to 7-3.

The game was the first of two games in the opening round of the Lehigh Christmas City Classic.

Richmond 6-0 sophomore forward Genevieve Okoro scored a career- and game-high 27 points and also led all players with 10 rebounds. She hit on 8-of-13 from the field and 11-of 15 from the foul line. Senior guard Abby Oliver added 14 points for the Spiders.

JMU senior forward Kiara Francisco (Lakeland, Fla./Winter Haven) came off the bench to lead the Dukes with a career-high 20 points; she also had a season-high seven rebounds. Junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 16 points.

Junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) was JMU’s top rebounder with nine, and redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) finished with seven rebounds.

Richmond scored 46 points from the field and 25 from the foul line, where the Spiders converted on 25 of 33 attempts. In the opening half all 11 Richmond field goals were scored on layups.
