Senior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) tallied a game-high five goals to lead the #10/8 James Madison (5-0) women’s lacrosse team to a 16-11 victory over Richmond (2-6) on Saturday afternoon at the JMU Women’s Lacrosse Complex.
Lomady scored the first three goals for the Dukes in the opening 8:14 and was one of three Dukes to record a hat trick in the contest, as redshirt sophomore Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) scored four times and junior Ariel Lane (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) found the net three times.
Richmond got on the board first when Kara Moschetti scored on a free position shot with 23:31 remaining in the first half, but JMU responded with eight consecutive goals over the next 10:19 to take an 8-1 lead.
Lomady tied the game at 1-1 with 22:46 on a wrap-around shot, and she gave JMU the lead for good 12 seconds later after receiving a pass from Ancarrow and burying it in the back of the net. She kept her high-potent offense going with a free-position goal 48 seconds later to give JMU a 3-1 advantage with 21:46 to go.
The Dukes would score five more in a row to grab the seven-goal lead against the Spiders. An Ancarrow goal with 35 seconds remaining in the half gave JMU an 11-3 lead at the intermission.
The Dukes continued its offensive prowess in the early going of the second with a goal by Lane 57 seconds in and a free-position score by Lomady to give JMU its largest lead of the game at 13-3 with 24:20 remaining.
Richmond’s Mary Flowers trimmed the lead back to single digits with a goal on a free-position shot with 23:11 to play. That goal sparked a 7-0 run by UR over the next 17:16 to cut JMU’s once comfortable advantage down to just 13-10 with 5:55 to go. The Spiders held the Dukes scoreless for 19:41 during their run.
Junior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) ended the draught with 4:39 left when she made a spin move and fired the ball into the net to put JMU up 14-10. Richmond answered on a free position with 2:22 remaining by Sam Stevenson, but the Dukes scored a pair of goals in the final 18 seconds to take a five-goal victory.
James Madison outshot Richmond 26-19 and held a 24-19 advantage on ground balls and an 18-11 lead on the draws. Junior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had a game-high seven draw controls and junior Annie Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added five ground balls. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) remained unbeaten this season for the Dukes with six saves in just under 51 minutes played.
For Richmond, a trio of Spiders recorded hat tricks on the afternoon. Flowers tallied three goals, with one assists, three draw controls and a game-high seven ground balls. Stevenson and Moschetti also had three goals each, and Stevenson contributed four draw controls for UR.
